Make Yourself a Priority in 3 Easy Steps

Updated: Feb 19, 2023

One of the things I like to challenge my clients on is their belief about where they fit in their list of priorities. This conversation almost always turns to one of time, but there’s more to making yourself a priority than just better clock management.

Women tend to put the needs of others before their own. My question to them is “How’s that working for you?” The smile usually fades. Now, let me just say there are situations where your needs need to take a backseat. But are you doing that more than is necessary?

If you are ready to prioritize yourself, you need to think small. Here are 3 easy ways to start.

Small Blocks of Time

William Penn said, “Time is what we want the most but what we use the worst.” Yes, time management needs to be addressed if you want to take better care of yourself. But, have you ever reviewed your calendar for commitments that you need to say no to? How about the massive time wasters like scrolling social media? Having more time in your day, even a few 20-minute blocks, means time for meal prep or reading or meditating or walking or whatever.

Small Steps Forward

Whether it’s your mental health or your physical health, you have got to stop putting it low on your list of priorities. You are no good to others if you aren’t good to yourself first, so movement is essential. Losing 50 pounds by this summer is not realistic for women our age but getting in 8000 steps a day is. Set a movement goal that fits in between meetings.

Small Changes to Your Choices

Just as our definition of exercise changes at our age, so too does our bodies use of the calories we consume. Our metabolism is slowing down and that forces us to rethink the quality and quantity of food that’s best to fuel our bodies. This is no time for crazy diets or major changes. It is though time to put our health and longevity first.

Take Action

Managing your time, movement, and consumption is absolutely within your control, if you choose to take it. Which of these 3 would be the best one to start with? Remember, pick up a pebble, don't try to move a mountain.

Be brave enough to make yourself a priority. Adapt your mindset to allow for more empowering habits and beliefs. Get ready to thrive!
